Yesterday I decided it was time to add a larger deeper water section to my mandarin newt set up ready for fast approaching breeding season, although I have spoken to people who say that their mandarins do all the courtship, and egg laying out of water.
I hardly expected the water section to be used, but within 5 minutes 3 of them had entered the water and were swimming around happily.
This morning the same three are still sitting fully submerged in the water, and have now fed in their as well.

Today I found my first few eggs, not on plants in the water , but on damp moss that I added overhanging the water section, after tips from Ian rigg telling me that that was where his layed eggs.
Only a few as yet, and too soon to be sure they are fertile, but heres hoping

Interesting: My pair has never shown any interest in water..in 6 years! Then this March they've been going in regularly. I've seen theme in the water, but they also have been covered with duckweed when I click on the light. No eggs yet, but I'm looking!

Not many eggs produced, and out of those, around half are infertile.
Hopefully I will be able to raise the few that remain

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
