Hey guys, just wondering what foods you have fed your axy apart from the suggested!
i have fed mine:

frozen and fresh brine shrimp
frozen bloodworm
pigs liver / kidney
cooked chicken pieces
hermit crab food
tropical fish flakes

i was thknking of getting some fish to feed to him, would love to see him swim around and hunting ;o) instead of jumping up to see me with a pice of meat wiggling around in my hand! haha ;o)

are all these food ssafe for him?

Hi Luke,

The usual suggestion is earthworms - our axolotls love them (I think they might even be a complete food). They also like catfish pellets.

I would very strongly advise against feeding them cooked chicken (fatty, inappropriate nutrition). Live feeder fish, too are probably more trouble than they're worth, as they can nibble on the axolotl. There's a very good guide to keeping axolotls on this site that covers all these things, which you might enjoy reading.

Also, if your axolotl is big enough, dropping a live earthworm in there might be the sort of thing that would get him/her hunting.

In my experience feeder fish are a bad idea. They have a strong urge to nibble axolotls gills as they look alot like bloodworm!

does anybody feed theres repti sticks they are like a pellet but in a stick they float i usually get them and feed with tweezers also mine loves earthworm yum yum a big worm lol

?K?0e bad news about fish on this forum I beg to differ. My grand uncle has a large Axolotl that he has kept for 6 years mostly on gold fish. I have also read that in the wild axolotls are (were) one of the few amphibians to eat lots of fish.

I've heard of a lot of people feeding axies this way and i liked the idea of it, but when i tried my axie was minus his gills and looking very sorry for himself in a pretty short space of time, i'm afraid for me it's a case of once bitten, twice shy!

Ben, Axolotls usually inhabit fish-free waters. Feeder fish are a great way to introduce parasites and diseases. Just because one person has good luck on fish doesnt mean its okay for everyone. There are also people who are resistant to the HIV virus, but you wouldnt recommend everyone having unprotected sex.

Ben: That point about the fish and your grand uncle is like me saying I've run across a busy street with my eyes closed and I was fine. It means I was lucky, not correct.

Quote [ pigs liver / kidney ... cooked chicken pieces ] Endquote

Anyone in here believe that an axolotl will ever bite a piece off a mammal or bird ... and cook it ??

Andre, there was a discussion recently about what to feed axolotls. and the things we feed them that they never run across in nature include: earthworms (mostly of european descent), brine shrimp (how many brine shrimp live in fresh water?), pinkies, pellets, bloodworms, practically anything. Just some foods are better than others. Cooked chicken is not one of them.

What do they eat in the wild? I suppose they would eat medium to large worm/crustacean type things am I wrong?

Kaysie,

I can understand that axies living in captivity dont eat much of what they're used to in the wild ... still, diet should be as close as possible to what they would be eating in the wild.

Fish based pellets are probably closer to their 'normal' diet than any T-bone steak ... even if its minced to dust ;)

I've seen so many postings about people feeding them meat ... why not banning that food alltogether ?

Andre, which is why I dont recommend cooked chicken. I feed mine earthworms, with the occasional waxworm.

Mine mainly get earthworms - with strips of liver as the occasional treat. When they were little they loved bloodworms, but they seem to have forgotten what to do with them now! Last week when i tank cleaning, i'd put them in a small tub while i scrubbed stuff.... i threw in some frozen bloodworm but they ignored them(unless i dropped them one by one onto their heads)

Mine will only eat them if you wave a block of them in front of there faces, but worms are moving anyway so that might be the reason why they wont eat them.

I used to feed feeder fish to some of my larger newts and axolotyls. They loved them, but i lost a couple of newts to a bacteria infection that they received from the fish. Feeder fish can get very stressed out and are more susceptible to disease that can get passed on to your pet. Get a good sinking pellet food (Ragen) that is the main diet and add earthworms and occasional beef heart.

Are any fish based pellets ok? If I feed my steak I roll it in repto-cal a multi-vitamin for reptiles to make sure it has some nutrition for them. They only get it about once a fortnight, otherwise they eat frozen axolotl food, axolotl pellets and bloodworms.
Are pellets and food designed for turtles and reptiles ok to feed? My 2 will only eat food if it is their face and wont hunt around for it so I hand feed them both. Is this normal?
Cheers, Kat

Katherine there is specilased axolotl pellets by aquamaster that is made for axolotl...so why not get them...they are excellent..I am in Aus and I am sure they have them in NZas well
