Hi there,
So my 6 month old leucistic was floating hard three days ago, she likes floating so I let her be for the night. The morning after she was at the bottom but she couldn't keep her left side down, I gave her the rest of the day and then put her in the fridge. Yesterday morning I changed the water, which was fowled. She is no longer floating but her left side a noticably dark. I have black sand so I am assuming it's a blockage. However, I have read a few things which lead me to think she may have a liver problem.
So, should I leave her in there to see if she expels more, or get her back in the tank since she is no longer floating?

Thanks in advance.

How long is your axolotl? Has she passed any sand? Make sure you use the fridging guide and slowly acclimate her to the warmer temperature. If you think she is ingesting sand, it may be best to remove the sand.

She's about 6 inches. No sand yet, and she's on day three of fridging. I'll get a picture of her when I change the water, her left side is black and the right side looks normal... Any ideas?
When I first got my axolotls they both ingested sand and passed it without trouble, they were half the size then and they seemed to have learned the lesson. So I'm at a loss. I would rather rule everything else out before I rip my tank apart, I've put a lot of work into my plants and my cherry shrimp rely on their little forest.

Could we possibly have a picture of your axxie? I'd like to see her darker side and see if it has an easy or harmless explanation. Does it appear to be on the surface of her skin or inside her tummy (since you can see through your leucy's skin)?

What is her diet like? Quite often, liver problems can be caused by a restricted diet rich in fatty, salty or processed foods, so if she is eating a selection of foods and some of them are fresh (i.e worms or similar), then this is a little less likely.

Does she seem happy in the fridge? I feel you can usually get a sense for how your axxie is feeling by looking at them. If the dark colour appears to be inside her tummy, then she may well have swallowed some sand and she might be better off left in the fridge (which is why it might be a good idea to post a picture).

It's good that she is passing some waste, however, as the three most likely explanations I can think of are constipation (very common and most likely solved now), sand impaction (which may be solved by fridging, or with the help of a vet if necessary) and skin colouration (a natural dark marking - leucys are prone to dark spots).
