Shrimps with Axolotls

I don't breed shrimp...but since both are closely related Neocaridina and their breeding/care is exactly the same for both pearl blue and rcs I would assume housing them together would be just fine. But I'm not POSITIVE if they interbreed, although I think they do.

I'm not willing to hybridize my neocardina line as I plan to sell the Red Cherrys at some point and don't want to mix up the genetics anymore than I have to.

However my cardina line I may mess with. I already have Tigers, but may totally mix it up with blue tiger, bee etc.

Still, that would mean I couldn't ever sell any Tigers so it's something to think about.

I'd probably get another tank for Crystals.

As for mixing pearl blue with Reds, the ones I've seen hybrised either come out wild, or totally goofy with large heads.

I've done a fair amount of reading on this. PRetty much all of the neocardina family will interbreed. They are very closely related, most simply selectively bred from the same red cherrys, however hybridising now, so far along the genetic chain loses characterists.

shrimpnow.com or planetinverts.com has fancy crossbreeding tables.

Hmm..on that chart is says that blue pearl and red cherry won't breed. Odd.

Edit: "Please remember that the Blue Pearl Shrimp cannot be kept with any other Neocaridina Shrimp or else they will cross-breed and create an ugly hybrid shrimp."

So they WILL breed...just make ugly offspring.

I know. I almost regretted saying that right after I typed it, but elodea grows so unbelievably fast ... I'm no biologist but doesn't water + CO2 + light = 02 and simple sugars? What about the rest of the plant's structure, is it all made of sugar? ... Is it worth starting a new thread on the de-nitrifying benefits of different aquatic vegetation? :p
Yes, that is the right formula. The structure of the plant is created by combining the sugars and those same elements (Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Carbon) along with smaller amounts of Nitrogen, Phosphorous and minute amounts of other elements to make larger and more complex molecules (proteins, complex carbohydrates like starches, and lipids).

Plants do consume some of the nitrogen in its various forms (ammonia, nitrite and nitrate) from you tank water and are, therefore, helpful in shortening the cycling period. They also help "sweeten" the water due to the oxygen that is released as a result of photosynthesis.

The chart also shows that they should not be kept together, look at the key.

Just an update, I now having a thriving tank of red cherry shrimp! I now have 15x as far as I can see! I put afew in with my axolotl at the weekend, it chased them around for 3 days failing to catch them then when I came down this morning no sign of shrimp at all!

I am enjoying the shrimping all most as much as the axolotling, so cheers for putting me onto it!

I agree,

I've got 4 pregnant ladies now and it's really interesting to watch all the behaviours in the tank.

I have about 30 shrimps at present but in 3 weeks when these hatch I'll be looking at around 100 - 110 which is amazing in just a few weeks.

I find the shrimping fascinating as there is less risk and you can explore the parameters yourself, with axies there's higher risk and you gotta be pretty strict with everything.

Hi Guys

I trust the shrimping is going well for all of you.

I have a problem: my Java Moss is dying....well almost dead.

I had a massive clump, covering a huge area in my 160L tank. I tore off chunks to create my java moss wall. I'm wondering if that process killed it the remaining clump but doubtful. I'm thinking that wouldn't kill it?

As some may recall, I also had a snail problem and I went through a cleansing process over months to remove them using copper amongst simply emptying the tank.

I've since refilled the tank and moved the shrimp and the java moss back in. This time, I've used black sand which make the RCS look fantastic. I'm wondering if the black sand is doing something to the water.

My shrimp have been in the rebuilt tank for about a month. No probs there. Java ferns and anubias are going strong too. Just a prob with the java moss. Some plant species going ok and only one species dying is hard to make sense of.

I just tested GH and KH today. KH was 2. I stopped putting drops in at 45 with GH. I think something was going wrong. It never changed colour from red to green. Having high GH and super soft KH sounds weird.

Any thoughts please.

Cheers
Dave

PS. I've fed heaps of shrimps or more to the axies over the last month. I think the axies have the knack of getting them now and the shrimp dont seem to last for as many weeks as they first did. Now it is maybe a week for most to be gone.

Hi guys,

Just thought I'd drop by after all these weeks and say hi.

My shrimping is going really well, went from 35 shrimps to now having about 150 maybe more. They're always moving and hiding so it's hard to count but there's usually 5-6 berried at any one time.

I've got into the shrimps in such a big way that I'm setting up racking to breed harder varieties commercially.

I have a 160 litre and a 200 litre tank setup for shrimping with ADA Amazonia II and the other with sand to produce Crystals and blue tiger shrimp.

I've done a ton of reading and have experimented with these varieties so am fairly confident.

Nice to see eveybody still here. Laters

from purple tub to tank with 100's of shrimps nice going!

Brilliant! What are you feeding them?
[edit] ... and is that a crayfish sitting on the side of brown cave like thing near the back of your tank?
