I'm hoping to find some answers for what happened.
I've only had Ricky & Lucy since the end of July. They were doing amazing - growing well and looking very healthy.
Last week I noticed a bit of white fluff on Lucy's gills, which were less bright than normal. A fellow axie owner suggested trying to very gently wipe it off. She had avoided salt baths before by doing this. But unfortunately I was not able to wipe it off and obviously did not want to do more damage than good by continuing to try.
So I followed the steps on here for salt baths- I started them on Friday....She was separated from Ricky and received 2 salt baths a day. I was very careful with the ratios as I had just read a thread where someone felt they put in too much salt and irritated their axies skin. Lucy was doing much better by Sunday and I was going to reintroduce her to the tank with Ricky on Monday. All the white fluff was gone and she seemed to be stronger as she wiggled when I transferred her to and from the salt tub.
Monday morning I woke up and she was dead. I'm absolutely devastated. I have no idea what happened.
I do know that a couple weeks back, the nitrites spiked a bit. I had missed a darn worm hiding under some (fake) driftwood. So I immediately did a full water change and then 50% water change the next day and the day after- the parameters were back to normal.
Temperature is stable at 67F - it's super hot in Florida, but I keep my house nice and chilly, I've placed the tank under an AC vent, I have an aquarium fan, and I have a few frozen water bottles to swap in and out. I would like it a bit cooler, but 67* is where I can keep it stable - I also don't want to stress them by fluctuating temperatures.
Substrate is sand, although I've removed a lot of it during the last full water change as I think it was hard for me to keep as clean as I wanted.
What else.... oh water flow- I make sure the filter flow is dispersed so there's no current.
Someone had suggested an airpump so I just put one in - I have a 20gallon tank and I use a pump for a 10gallon tank to make sure the bubbles are nice and soft. It's in the corner and doesn't seem to make a lot of current throughout.
I'm just absolutely devastated and I don't know what I've done wrong. It all happened so fast. She was amazing and then she was just gone. Anyone have any advice or suggestions as to what happened, what I did wrong, what I can do better?
Ricky seems fine (lonely now, but fine). He finally came out from hiding this morning and ate a worm. I want to be sure I do everything I can to keep him happy and healthy. They were both quarantined over the weekend when I noticed the fungus on Lucy. He doesn't seem at all effected by it (physically).
Thanks in advance for any input.
I attached a photo of her from early last week, and a photo of her on Friday when I started the salt baths. Her gills were a beautiful feathery red until this week. She was so amazing.
