okay, he is in the fridge. when i scooped him up he moved alot, is this a good sign?? i hope this is the right thing to do. he did eat earlier but very little. he is moving around in his container and sucking up air

He can stay in there pretty much indefinately. I know it sounds strange putting him in the fridge, but axolotls love cold water and he will stand a better chance of recovering in the fridge, than leaving him in a stressful environment.
The fridge will slow the metabolism to the point where he will not likely be inclined to eat, but the good news is the weight loss is also slowed right down. I would leave a small worm in with him just in case he is feeling peckish one night. Live worms can live for a few days underwater, if the worm dies take it out and replace with fresh.
