Hey everyone!
The last couple of times I've been to Kellyville pets, they've had a poor looking axy... The little guy is thin, with basically no gills left :( They don't have a for sale sign, so I'm thinking they're trying to improve its health (I hadn't had a chance to talk to them about it). They're generally a great store, they keep their axys in long (and I mean long) tanks with bare bottom, cold, with lots of shady plants attached to wood. All the other axy's I've seen there have been in tip top shape, so maybe this guy is just unfortunate :(
Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone is able to get the guy off them to try and nurse him back to health? I would, but I don't have the room :(

Sadly I've seen many unwell axolotls at Kellyville pets :( I've offered on a couple of occasions to take them home & see if I can help them to recover... Only to be told that they are treating with medical treatments (melafix) added to the water. They've had really horrifically unhealthy juveniles in the tank covered in fungus - I've offered to take them home (free of course) only to be told it would have to be full price - no discount! They removed it & took it out the back after I insisted they provide appropriate care

My opinions of the enclosure they are kept in is different to yours - they are long tiered tanks containing driftwood plants which are there to choose from - there's no signs warning that this is an axolotl area & that live animals are hiding under the wood - I've been there on a busy Saturday & kids are just rummaging in the tanks moving plants unaware of the lotls & when they do find them they start chasing them around :( (of course parents don't say anything  ) these axolotls are stressed & there is no good information given out. I've personally helped 2 people who found me on gumtree who bought axolotls from Kellyville pets & were sold gravel & in one case a heater & a filter 4x stronger than the tank (bought at same time) could ever handle!
I went straight there after seeing what they had just sold someone & I spoke to the aquarium manager & emailed the store manager voicing my dismay at the information given out! The aquarium mamager showed me the "axolotl care sheet" they hand out (when they remember) & it states gravel is OK  I've asked them to rectify the care sheet & it's no longer on their website so I'm hoping they're fixing it!

I don't rate Kellyville pets as a store to buy axolotls from - they use Pisces Fish Wholesalers as a supplier & the quality of their axolotls is always abysmal!

I might pop down & pay Kellyville a visit tomorrow - I don't need an excuse to take the boxster for a run :)

Oh my god I never thought of people disturbing the tanks!! I have never been there when it has been busy though, so haven't seen it.
Now that you mention it, my past 2 axys were from there and they did have health issues. Luckily, the one I have now is from somewhere else (impulse purchase- what can I say).
That's ridiculous that they aren't accepting help. Perhaps they're too proud too realise they're not doing the right thing.
Thankyou for this enlightenment!!
Goodluck for your trip there, that little guy needs help. If they don't listen to you, I'll shoot em an email/letter of complaint :)

http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-be...85671-aussies-throw-book-them.html#post344087 I'll direct you guys to this article: If they are providing bad information and putting their animals in danger, then they are in violation of the Pet Shop Code for NSW, and are as such liable to be prosecuted for their malpractice. I suggest you "remind" them of the fact that they are legally required to provide safe habitats for them (Section 5.1.1.6: Animal enclosures must be maintained to minimise the risk of injury to animals.). Hopefully they'll come around VERY quickly after that. Additionally, it may be an idea to suggest they find a better supplier for their own financial survival...
