Question: Size Issue

So I have had my axolotl Gilles since May and they hatched in early to mid December making them almost a year at this point. However they are only (by eyeballing) about 6 - 8 in. And I’ve noticed every once in a while they will rapidly swim up for air and rag doll back down. The summer had been pretty tough although now I have increased their food but it still seem to be happening. Is there anything wrong here?

All of that sounds like pretty normal behavior and as long as their body condition is good (tummy around as wide as head) I don't think the size is any cause for alarm.
