whats the smallest canister type filter? so far it looks like the zoomed 501.?
im looking for something to put on a ten gallon for my red-spotted newts and i like how will canister filters theres just the in and out tubes so theres nothing taking up swimming room and vibrating all the time like an internal filter, i dont like the over the side filters becuase im afraid they escape and dry up.

Lauren, I'd just go without a filter for a 10 gal tank. How much water do you plan on having in it? Just make sure to do weekly water changes, and I wouldn't worry about a filter at all.

Another option to consider is a bubble-driven corner filter (unless you can't stand the sound of the air pump). There are some comments (mostly positive) about the zoomed 501 elsewhere in this subsection of the forum. It might be overkill, but it would be an excellent filter for a 10-gallon tank. It does need to sit on the table at tank-level, not underneath.

I plan on having the tank as full as possable while still having a land area so they have lots of place to swim.
the tank are in my reptile room in the basement so im not worried about the noise but i was told when setting up my african clawed frog that the vibrations of an in tank filter (power and bubble types) would bother him so i assumed they would also bother the newts.
I have an underwater powerfilter ( i think thats what its called) if those dont bother newts i could just use that for them, i'll have to look and see if my bubble type still works.

I use a canister filter for my turtle and just like the design, being about to have the different medias and stuff and having on the input and output tubes to worry about

I dont know what the best kind for the newts would be

I ise the Fluval canisters on almost all my tanks. The smallest Fluval should be OK but you may need to diffuse the discharge with a few well placed rocks.
