Smoke out of his mouth?

I fed my axolotl a worm this evening and as he was slowly gulping it down, a white ethereal (I never get to use that word) substance came out of his mouth with each gulp. Except that it was underwater, it looked a lot like he was burping smoke.

I can think of only two explanations for this - either it was remnants of sand from his stomach (it was whitish and so is the sand), or it was digestive fluid. I have no basis for these theories.

Does anyone else have any idea?

When I saw the title of the post I was more than a little alarmed ..but having read it I am much happier and understand what you are saying. I have seen similar happen when my gang eat worms and put it down to it being something being squished out of the worms rear end :blush:..not too surprising considering that its been munched on by an axolotl .

I have noticed that too Eva. I thinks its part of the worms insides being pushed out by the force of the axolotl swallowing, and yes your right it does look like smoke.
Have you tried him with a slug?
That can be even worse, mine sometimes spit out a load of slug goo after they have swallowed one.
Moral of this story: always feed your axolotls after you have eaten.

Excellent, thanks you two. Bella - sorry about the initial fright. I did post in "Free for all" and not "Sick Axie" in the hope of implying that I am not concerned about a disorder, but I deleted the first sentence of "First, my axolotls are the picture of health" - reckon I should have left that in.

Ok so this is a worm's swan song, his way of silently saying Holy s.........!

If my axolotl puffs smoke, does that mean I get to call him a water dragon now? :grin:

Rather than the insides of the worm, it's probably the slime that the worm excretes as a protective device that is coming out. I see this all the time.

I agree with Kaysie, I have also noticed this sort of 'smoke' puff coming off them when I wash them.
