What are some species of snails that would live successfully with newts, such as mesotriton alpestris apuanus, triturus dobrogicus, or triturus marmoratus?
And do snails tend to get out of hand with their reproducing?

Thanks,
Andrew

If you don't mind that you will never be rid of them then snails should be fine.
keep in mind some wild snails could bring nematodes and flukes that could parasitize your amphibians.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
