Hi, I'm a new owner of a axolotl :D I only got him yesterday, but have a few questions, he seems calm & relaxed but i've noticed he'll head down towards the filter & flipps out (4ft tank), he goes alittle crazy, but he then calms down heads back towards the other end & seems relaxed again. He's eating, I feed him last night & he ate with no problems, Is this normal behaviour?? any advice please?

Could we get a picture of your setup? And do you know your water parameters? Ammonia, nitrates, nitrites and temp?

Is their a lot of current at the filter? Axolotls don't like strong currents. People often baffle filters over ornaments or block part of the outtake.

I don't have a photo yet, Its 200liters, 340mmH x 380mmW x 1200mmL, the pH is 7.4 & the Temp is 22, we are on tank water so I'm getting tests kits first thing tomorrow. i had the tank up & running a week before i got him, I did start on a filter for 200L but found that was to strong, i've now gotten a filter for a 150 tank which made a big difference but i've notice it still creates a current. Thanks guys for the advice & keep it coming, I'm animal lover & I hate seeing my kids upset  I will get some photos up soon, Thanks again

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
