Somethings Wrong with My Axie

I'm with Kira on this. Gravel causes impaction. It MAY have worked with your axolotl fine for years. But your axolotl is swallowing gravel. Eventually, this will probably cause impaction.

And I have NO idea how you think water conditioners can cause this. Water conditioners break the chlorine-amine bond in chloramine treated water. I've used them for years in chlorinated water. Thousands of members of the forum have used them. What you have stated makes no sense.

This person needs to FEED THEIR AXOLOTL first and foremost. Not worry about the 1% cases where something that's not appropriate works for one person.

Hi everyone, thanks for all of your help but its no good anymore

Little Axie died at lunch  I'm burying him in my yard later on.

After the tank is cycled, i may think about getting another from a local breeder but not sure if they are suited to our hot part of oz.

Thanks again anyways :(

i am sorry to hear that, at least your axolotl is in a better place now :( you tried do do anything you could and thats a good thing.

@all, maybe its different in the US and other areas, but in germany and austria chlorinated water is not usual (either way i think its actually frightening, that your drinking water contains chlorine)

the fact that most of you seem to use dechlorinator may be a reason why i see so many axolotls in this community with regressing or very short gills. chlorinated water does not work for axolotl and other aquatic animals that is for sure, fish can cope with conditioners though (even though i would not recommend them at all) for an axolotl water that is mixed with dechlorinating substances is anything but healthy. and i really dont get why you state otherwise.

as for the gravel: most of the german axolotl community users use gravel with a grain of 1-3mm in their tanks, and none of their animals have died from impaction. of course they swallow it! but it goes through and does not cause any harm.

I am very sorry to hear about your little one!!

Hey Guys, My axolol is also in this predigament, I am about to put him in the fridge also.
But do you have to change the temp of the fridge at all ? 4 deg seems low....

Any help would be appreciated as i just got him today from a friend and i am trying to save him.
He hasn't eaten in weeks and temps in tank have been around 25 deg as i have been told.
He is definatly on his last leg maybe wont make the night.....

Sorry to hear about your axie. I changed the fridge to 8 deg and kept the milk and meat in the other fridge. Make sure to put him in a dark container, like icecream coz the fridge light is pretty damn bright when the doors open. Fridging just prolongs life doesnt encourage him to eat which is what you want ulimately.

May fridge him while you check your water chemisty, a very important thing! If the chemistry is ok and its just the temp, keep him in his dark container and put in the coolest part of house - mine happened to be tiled kitchen in the corner. Try lots of different foods, earthworm bloddworm small fish. Anything is better than nothing at this point.

May i suggest you jump into the chat room, there is always alot of people to give great advice.

I'm sure someone else will come along and give you better advice then I, but this is what i was told with my axie.

I am hoping for the best, sad to lose a pet.

Kagan's advice is sound and thorough. The only thing I could possibly add may be redundant: remember to change the water each day in the "fridge" container - have a bottle or two of fresh, dechlorinated water in the same fridge so that it is the same temp when you do water changes; and remember to clean out any uneaten food after a couple of hours at most.

Good luck to you,

-Eva

Thanx guys, Looks maybe like the fridge trick mite have worked. Last night after getting his water temp down to 17deg i got him to eat about the size of 2 pea's worth of food. And this morning temp is down to around 10 deg and he ate about half a pea size meal...... Very happy so far as im sure he hasn't eaten is weeks , you can see his poor little ribs and hip bones.... poor little thing, i hope i can save him.....

Hey, he is eating, that is wonderful! Patience, dear, patience and good care. I wish you all the best.
