I just bought a sponge filter and my fire bellys don't seem to mind it. I just want to know how efficient are they? I have a 10 gallon and it is a 20 gallon filter

It should be fine once the sponge cycles. I always use sponge filters on small tanks, they do the job perfectly and don't cause too much water movement.
