Hi there,

Just noticed that a foodstore near me sells sprats on their fresh counter. Would these be ok for my axies to eat? I would feed them raw, so my concerns ar ethe bones, and would it possible the sprats had some parasites that could be harmful for my axies?

Thanks in advance

Hi Sherri,

I would say stay away from sprats, down here we call juvenile Pacific Herrings, Clupea pallasii, sprats. If they are the same or similar up there, It would not be a good idea to feed axolotls Sprats.

Wow i learn something new. I didn't know what "Sprats" was.

Sprat seems to be a generic term for any small fish of the herring family. It's mainly used in reference to a small European marine fish called Sprattus sprattus (commonly known as brisling). Either way I would steer clear of using it, your basically feeding them anchovies.
