Still no luck!!

Hi I posted a thread not too long ago about my axies gills shrinking.
Solution was to take him out in a tubaware with daily water changes, feed him live black worms so he can learn how to eat on his own.

so since then, about a week now I been doing 100% water changes, and he has now learned to feed on his own, his weight looks like its going up and better. BUT his gills are even smaller! what do I do?! theyre almost stumps on his head, will he die? is it metamorphosis?

Is there a possibility that he's actually a tiger salamander juvenile?

They look fairly similar, and they do morph.

well do tiger salamanders glow too? under black/uv light?
i was just thinking he might be a tiger salamander also! but how did this happen if the person i bought it from had a clutch of "axolotl eggs" did one slip in there? hmmm

Here is a pic of him right now! he seems absolutely fine! acts the same as when i first got him, same personality and all... eats well idk... did he get some salamander goo?!

He's a very unusual colour. I'd get the water tested if I were you, the lack of gills is probably due to ammonia or nirtites/ates being too high.

Oh the color is due to lighting, it's night time and I do 100% water changes daily do that shouldn't be a problem...

Do you use dechlorinated water?

yes i do, i let it sit for 48 hours. change its water every day! and still no bueno

Water needs to be dechlorinated with a dechlorinating agent. It's no longer adequate to let water sit to dechlorinate, as most municipal water supplies use chloramine (which must be chemically removed), not chlorine (which will evaporate on its own).

He doesn't look bad to me.

lol... I know this lol... I use a dechlorine agent. I put it in, let it sit for a day to let it work... I have a cycle going for his water changes... I'm just worried because his gills are still shrinking... I'm doing everything according to the books but no luck

Because you're doing 100% water changes, and it's in a shallow setup, it's likely that the gills will be smaller, as there's more oxygen in the water, and less gill is needed.

Again, I don't think it looks bad. My axies have gills comparable in length.

I thought so... The thing is, he was in a 33 gallon tank and I noticed his gills shrinking drastically and came here seeking help... some one told me to put him in a tub so that he come to the top more easily, that the amonia level might be too high and suggested this for a few weeks to see if itll grow back out but it hasnt... and yours are the same as well??
