Strange behaviour!

Our axolotl Ricard Vitnos has a very strange behavior in the nights. when we go to sleep in the evening, Ricard who is in his tank in our bedroom starts to float up in the surface and "smacks" with his mouth a lot....(quite irritating when you are trying to sleep)but we love him anyways

And in the days he does it too!! The other axies that we have doesn't do that. And the water is fine in his tank so it's not ammonia or anything else. Has he not enough oxygen in the water or what? I know that axolots go up to the surface to get air once in a while. But is it normal to be on the surface very often. Maybe he has it as a "hobby" or are bored.

My one did that...I just thought it might be a large intake of air when they went to sleep? But I don't know for sure and you said your other ones don't do it. My one had some strange behaviour...

Sounds like he's just coming up for air. Mine sometimes make noise when they do, a splashing/smacking sound. If it's really quiet in my house, and they do it, it startles me

How often they come up for air depends on a lot of factors: The size of the gills, efficiency of the gills, the size of the lungs, aeration of the tank, etc. Even two axolotls in the same tank will come up at different rates.

Yeah it gives me a fright sometimes too, I'm wondering what on earth they're doing to themselves lol.

My axies are in my room and they do the same time, just when I'm trying to get to sleep.

It makes it difficult b/c I usually want to turn my light on to see them do their spaced-out float down to the bottom of the tank, or the nose-dive.

They are so funny!

I´ts good to know that our axolotl isn´t so weird after all. And I´m getting used to hear the smacking noise in the night from him!!He likes to float around the tank and look for food.He is a real food lover!!

lol mine does that too, its like he wants me to stay awake and feed him.
