Strange growth behind rear legs.

My brother is looking after my axolotl while I'm out of the country (a long term prospect). He recently reported a strange growth behind Silgor's rear legs. He sent a couple of photos: http://chris.jarvis.cc/uploads/Picture001.jpg and

We've got no idea what's wrong. He's eating pretty normally. He's currently living in Western Australia and water temperature has been rising as summer approaches. I'm not sure what it is right now, but it's probably just above 20C.

Anyone got any ideas?
 
Chris- I brightened and modified one of your images so it was easier to see the growth.

It also has discoloration in front of its back leg.

I have not seen anything like that before. Perhaps someone else has and will comment on it.
 
Do you have gravel in your tank? The water temp shouldn't be too high yet - it's still quite mild here. Your axie looks fairly old - any idea how old? It looks almost like a blood clot to me.
 
Yes, there is gravel in the tank. I did read warnings against it, but after the little guy scooted around on bare glass for a few years, I relented. I'll ask my brother if there's any chance that he could have ingested some stones.

Would river sand of some sort be better?

As for age, I got him in January 1996 (almost 10 years ago). He was 18cm long at the time - the smallest in the tank at the shop I went to. I'm not sure how long it took to reach his current size of 30cm.
 
yes he is pretty old. River sand would be better than gravel.
 
Actually the longevity record for axolotls is 17 years so I would be hesitant in calling this one more than middle aged.

well its an older axie. Most axies probably don't even live that long. I know there are some that can but most probably live around 6 years.
 
Jordan, on what do you base that fact? Most with healthy lives can live significantly longer than 6 years.
 
I'm sorry to say that I just received some bad news: Silgor died last night.

It hasn't been a good year for my family. First our cat in May (she _was_ 19, though) and now my axolotl. He may not have been the most active pet, but he will be missed.

it really is so rough loosing pets. Sometimes I feel closer to my animals than I do most other humans. Loosing animals really brings me down and it's sometimes so hard to get out of that damper state.
