Submersible filter and foam?

Hello...

I am new to keeping newts and have two tanks with submersible filters. Both seem to have a lot of foam/bubbles.It looks a lot like dishwater. Is this normal for this type of filter, and is it a problem?Having a waterfall seemed to reduce it,but I was concerned about blocking the filter intake.

Thanks for any insight.

yea i get that sometimes with mine when air gets trapped up in the filter.. check and see if there is some kind of aeration valve or something that could be opened up causing the bubbling. what kind of newts do you have? it could turn into a problem if you have a smaller newt species and the foam/bubbles are creating a current, and/or covering most of the water surface.

Thanks...I'll have a look at the filter. One newt is a taricha and the other is a very small firebelly. But the small one is currently kept in a 5 1/2 gallon tank with no filter. He'll hopefully move to the 10 gallon with the filter when he gets bigger.I was afraid he'd seem lost in it,or get trapped by the filter in the bigger tank.I'm a bit worried about the taricha just now, but I'll post more about that in the appropriate forum.

Thanks again,

we highly recommend not mixing for the above linked reason "

I'm sorry...I didn't make myself clear enough. The newts will be kept in different tanks.I have the two tanks with the submersible filters. One of those is currently empty except for a guppy and a few ghost shrimp. And I have the small tank with no filter where I have the small fire belly for now.Eventually the small newt may go into a larger tank, but not the one with the taricha.

Thanks for the reply though. The shop that sells the newts does claim that they can be kept together...but I'm sure you know how unreliable pet shop info can be

Oh, I forgot to ask, what type of filter do you have? Fluval, Duetto, etc.? The model will alsp be a help. Maybe someone on these forums will have experience with your specific filter and can help you out better with your problem.

It's a Whisper internal filter for 10 gallon tanks.Probably the foamy bubbles are just from the water agitation...more unsightly than anything else.I've noticed it's less of a problem in the tank where the plants and rocks break up the water spill,so maybe that's the solution. Thanks again.
