Question: Substrate choices other than flora base

Hi,

I've had my axies for about 2 months now... Can't believe how fast they've grown!

Anyway, I like to have planted tanks, and this is much easier to do with fish...
Options for substrate are pretty wide.

I have blue sand in my axie tank from big als.
Love the colour but it isn't very beneficial to plants.
I saw the blog on this site about using flora base but can't find it in Canada.

There is Aqua soil... But I worry about impaction.
Does anyone have experience with Aqua soil with axies?

When my guys eat they do suck in some sand but always pass it, so needs to definitely be axie safe.

My plants in their tank keep going brown.... I don't think the sand is helping the plants much.
I started using flourish excel to help the plants... And the lights are on a short time span and they're not too bright.

Help I would love a beautiful planted axie tank with caves and carpeting and beautiful plants.

Their tank just got cleaned yesterday so it's not this bad anymore... Have been having issues with brown algae.

My current tanks have silk plants, but I'm planning on changing to live plants when I change their tanks.
Other people seem to manage with planted tanks, and the link below gives some advice.

I'm considering keeping some of the plants in their pots, and also using things like anubias and java fern, which can be attached to rocks and wood, rather than actually planted.
Somewhere on the forum was a recent thread on cold water plants, which was also useful.

I use sand and have Mopani wood with Java fern attached to it. I also have some red wendii (spelling?) growing very nicely. I've always kept a planted tank with my axolotls and they really enjoy it.
