Substrate / Soil Mixtures for Ambystomid / Burrowing Salamanders

If the multi-purpose compost contains plant fertilizers or other chemicals - get rid of it. These can create a toxic environment for sals. Use plain topsoil without chemicals (sold at garden centers) or use coco-fiber substrate (Bed-A-Beast) etc., or optimally a combination of both. Also avoid peat moss or spaghnum moss which can contribute acidity to substrate and again set up an unsuitable environment.

Thanks for that Jan. Sounds like I shouldn't even wait til I change it in a couple of months then. I knew it was rash getting that stuff!
