Swimming?

Is it normal for my axolotl to be swimming as well as crawling?

He is new to his environment,
only had him for 5 days now.

Mostly he crawls along the bottom,
but occasionally he's been swimming around,
climbing his plants and floating back down.

Is this normal?
A good sign?

Sounds normal to me.

If your axie starts swimming around frantically, you may have water quality issues.

But what you're describing sounds normal as far as I've observed.

Sounds like he is just exploring.

Juvenile axolotls are quite active and will swim and clamber around. As the axolotl gets older, it will get lazier and spend much of its time sitting down the bottom of the tank doing as little as possible.

Axies are nocturnal; adults and juveniles will be very active at night and if you happen to walk past their tank one night - you may notice a party going on!

Mine used to swim heaps when I got them - I've got a photo of all four swimming at once across the tank! They'll go side to side and also up to the surface. But yeah, now mine are lazier and stay on the ground mostly.
