Can anyone help. my 18 month old axolotl "Sam" stopped eating and became very swollen 8 weeks ago. I took him to the vets who diagnosed either a parasite or ascites and treated him with a diuretic and flagyl after a week he got better and was great for about a month, then he went off his food and started swelling again, so I took him back to the vets and the treatment was repeated, he seemed to get better for a few days and started to eat again but has now stopped eating altogether and is very swollen, has anyone encounted this before and have any advice to offer. Linda

Ok Linda, the first thing I am going to ask you is what substrate are you keeping your axolotl on?

Is the swelling all over or is it just the belly area.
Something we all love to see on Caudata is a photograph of the axolotl . Sometimes this can help greatly in helping to diagnose a problem. If you could post a picture that would be great.

What have you been feeding Sam?
Do you carry out regular water changes and how much water do you remove each time?
Do you add any chemicals to your tank water?
I hope we can help you, you've come to the right place....Good luck!
