I joined this site in hopes I could get some advice for my golden albino Axle. He recently had a pretty nasty fungus infection that took a few weeks to clear up. It attacked his gills and 3 of his toes. These 3 toes became injured, I think because of the salt baths (which I immediately stopped after realizing they could be harming him). He is now clear of fungus and while his gills are a bit beaten up they are recovering, his toes on the other hand are a bit swollen and have been for a few days. I was wondering if this is normal for a recovering wound or if theres something wrong? Is there anything more I can do to help? (I did black tea baths for a couple days to see if that would help but nothing really happened) I have attached a picture of his toes so you can see, any advice is greatly appreciated!!

His tank params in his hospital tank are all perfect, he gets water changes every day to keep the levels that way. Felt that was important to include.

Also I feel the need to apologize for using salt baths, reading online it seemed like it would be a great solution but after seeing what it did to my boy I don’t think it was. It killed the fungus, sure, but I don’t think it should have been my first decision. It never will be again unless I have no other choice thats for sure.

Salt baths can be rough which is why tea baths are recommended when your axolotl is injured and has fungus. The swelling could be anything from bloat to bacterial infection. A vet would be needed to properly diagnose and recommend treatment.

Luckily I don’t think its a bacterial infection but I will absolutely be keeping an eye out just in case. His other toe that was looking like this has become a lot less red and swollen so I’m hoping its just healing weird. Who knows, maybe I’m just being super paranoid but after that fungus infection and seeing the effect that + salt baths had on him I can’t help but be :,)
I’m hopeful, due to that one toe starting to return to normal, that these other two will follow close behind.

Wonderful news :) Axle has returned from his hospital tank and is now in his 40 gallon again! I meant to keep him longer to keep an eye on his toes but because of the heat it was nearly impossible to keep the temperature down. Since his tank is now hooked up to a chiller (working great so far btw!!) I decided I would just let him go back. Hes been doing great so far and his toes seem a lot less red and irritated! They are not back to normal yet but its progress nonetheless. The 3rd toe is not red at all anymore and is a normal yellow color like all the other toes again, just ever so slightly bigger (its been getting smaller so it might disappear on its own in time). Just figured I’d update:)

I also got him a new log hide while he was in hospital that I sanded down to insure it was safe for him. I also filled in a small entrance at the top with foam to make sure he doesn’t get himself stuck. He loves it so far :) I hope to see his gills return to their former glory and his toes continue to heal!! With the chiller working like a charm I doubt I will see that infection return (high temps was the cause) so hopefully he can live a happy and comfortable life from here on out!
(Don’t suggest putting the chiller in your bedroom unless you don’t mind loud noises tho! The pump is quite loud haha)
