Ignore my previous post below... As it turns out i think the elodea is doing a good job...

My female shanjing has laid a number of eggs curled up in the leaves in true stereotypical newt fashion!

Needless to say, i'm very pleased and am now looking into sources of food for the larvae. Any help or experience anyone has on this would be much appreciated

I may post some pictures over the weekend

Thanks

That's great news Mark! Congrats on the eggs. Friends of mine who have bred shanjing tell me the larvae feed easily on foods like daphnia and chopped blackworms and have some strong cannibalistic tendencies...might want to watch that.

Thanks for that nate - i'm going to try and take it all into consideration. i'm currently looking at the best ways to get hold of daphnia and am setting up some aquaria

Congratulations - I wish you the best with them. Quite honestly, raising them to metamorphosis is easy - follow what I said about Tylototriton verrucosus on Caudate Central. It's when they're metamorphs that it's tricky.

All the best.

Well I have to agree with John. On numerous in the past I have received some larvae to raise from F. Pasmans and raised them without problems. However once they are on land they always did well in a drier setup (or a setup with a drier environment). I lost my whole group lastly when I put in too much water and the ground was very soaking wed. On 2 days they were gone. With dry I do not refer to extremely dry, what I did was get leaflitter out of the woods and have about 15 cm of soil , on top of that I pieces pieces of wood (some rotten and wedd and some drier), so the animals can choose themselves. Hope this helps you ?? I have been able to raise some up to adults , but quite lately with more activities in my professional life , sometimes not having the time to check (which you should best do on a dayly basis) during the working ... I prefer sticking to my Hynobius which are more robust in that manner. But I miust admit... if ever they would be offered again... I would be tempted

Thanks for all those points and the feedback!

The female has now stopped laying. The total egg count is around 40, which seems lower than the figures i have read. Any ideas why? Size or age of the female maybe?

Ill keep you posted
