after a few stressful hours the driver finally arrived with my newts. since travis cant do pics of his and wants to -i figure ill do them for him-we both got them from the same person. i had asked for 3.4 but got 4.3 -no matter, they appear in good health(no sores, not skinny) and i started their batryl today. like the kweichows, and unlike the shanjings -they can move quite fast when they want to. excuse the crudeness of the pics -they were done quickly and cleaned only a little.

Greats photos. Can you give me the key to sex males and females, please.
 
its the same as with the shanjing(there is an illustration on the care sheet). essentially the females vent is small and more circular than the males - the females vent doesnt have need for a larger opening like the males who have all those villi (??) and need to produce spermatophores. the males vent is a much longer slit -i can try to get a photo tonight. if you try to part the vent on a female you will see it is small, the males vent in 2 times longer and can part more to show off the insides. unfortunately these are not easy to sex by head type like the shanjings -some females have longer heads but one has a triangular head-so no uniformity there. in comparison the females arent that much longer in body but are more stouter.

when females get in egg laying mode their smaller vent turns to a volcano shape, the males vent of course will swell more and you can sometimes see the villi protuding when they are in water.

on a side note these are the curliest tailed tylos i have seen. they curl the tails alot -newts will do this in stress but usually i see the tail in 2 u-turns-these guys will complete 2 full tight curls -its weird.

Thanks for posting the pics Paris. I will try to sex mine in a few days or so when I am satisfied that all are eating well. I hate to stress the weaker ones out at this point by handling them (especially upside down). Take care.

ok here are the odd photos -it may be something or nothing-after all its a small sampling group.(4.3)-it may be dimorphism or not-there are WC adults and probably not related -anyways pics were takin fast and not all in focus

I have just one female and I guess I'll just wait for a CB male to come my way...
 
Sorry, it seems I miscalculated. Let's see....the standard price here at the various shops is $270 per male, so multiplied by 4 gives us $1,080, and so $90 per female x 3 gives us a total of $1,350. If that's not an incentive for captive breeding, I dunno what is

Ah, it's a shame these animals have acquired such commercial value. Let's get that breeding started people!
 
someone is still making a hefty profit off those animals somewhere along the line, they only cost 45 each here, and you get quantity discounts if you buy more than three. I would think that the importation from china to the US would be more costly than from china to japan (though i may be wrong, i know nothing about importation laws and procedure).

i guess it just a factor of people in japan will probally pay those prices. if someone here tried to charge that much they would be sitting on those newts for a very long time.
 
i need to know from others who have these if they see the same difference i do in my genders-the orange spots on the males arms. let me know...
 
Hey, that is interesting! Seems there are no exceptions to this among the seven you have there...
 
If I remember correctly taliangensis does a waltl type amplexus. Might explain the orange pads in males. I still need to sex my group, I'll report back asap.
 
wow tim, that drawing of the two is cool. both the other photos from the berkley site should be of a male is my guess is right-they both have the arm patches-but its just a pigmentation difference -i cant notice any texture difference. id like to hear from travis too....hint ..hint....

I really have no idea about the sexes either. My camera currently is broken or I would send you some pictures. The females do appear to be the larger ones and possibly gravid. They all are good looking with no rubs and good weight on them. Good luck with yours.

Of the five that I purchased I appear to have a definite 1.3 - one of the females is still quite small so I am making an educated guess on that one. In addition, the male has orange markings on it's forelimbs. I am having a difficult time sexing the other individual. I want to say male but the vent is not as elongated as the other. Also, this individual has an orange mark on it's right forelimb only. This is also the only individual out of the group that is not eating well. It has not fed in over a week (it had eaten three times before that however). Today for the first time in a week it did notice it's food and even clambered over to check it out (earthworm) but then walked away. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
