Hi guys, I'm quite new to the forum and after some looking around I have a question.
For about a month I've had 3 T. Verrucosus.
Originally I made them quite a deep water aquarium with some driftwood and corkbark to come out of the water.
Funnily enough, they wouldn't really go into the water at that point...
Mind you, they are juveniles and born around June this year.
A week after I lowered the water to about 10cm one off them is in the water and he really seems to enjoy it there.
Although he does come to land sometimes when it's feeding time, I was wondering if I could feed him anything in the water?
I have already noticed they prefer live food and leave frozen bloodworms basically untouched.
That's why I'm feeding them little crickets now.
Anyone got an Idea what I can feed the one that's in the water now?

Mine eat live earthworm and bloodworm, they have eaten frozen blood worm in the past but now turn their nose up at it.

I would suggest live earth worms as Julia has already said (best nutritionally as a staple diet)
Llive Daphnia could also be a good addition to the water part to provide a light snack every now and again, or Tubifex or even live freshwater shrimp and a treat!

Would love to see some pictures of your guys and your set up! :D

Mine also refuse bloodworms, even the large live ones. They will eat any type of earthworm but be careful when you feed these - the newts go crazy and start biting each other so it's best to try and feed each one in a different corner. I alternate a feeding of earthworms with a feeding of Hikari sinking carnivore pellets, which they happily pick up from a dish.

I would like to try earth worms, but the frozen soil atm doesn't really allow me to catch any.
That's why I'm relaying on crickets as well.
Starting a daphia culture would be a nice Idea.
Any suggestions on what freshwater shrimps to feed them?
They're still juveniles and the one in the water is about 8cm I believe.
I will take a picture of the set up when I come home :)
The water is quite low now, but I plan on gradually raising the water level once they all start to get to the water.
Is it normal only one of the 3 is in the water?
It's the medium sized on as well. The smallest and biggest one prefer the land still...

Use a garden claw to loosen the soil, it works a treat when I'm trying to find worms

I have always found that Verrucosus love bloodworms, and hardly ever turn down food, maybe try feeding them live ones first then try mixing live and frozen together. If your newts are adults they won ttouch daphnia,it seems to be too small for them.Frozen bloodworms seem to be my Verrucosus favourite food
