Hi George,
I have a group of "black crocodile newts" that I purchased from an importer a few years ago. They are all wild caught. I have them setup in a large terrestrial vivarium that is thickly planted with pothos vine. Corkslabs are utilized for cover. I have one of those XL corner bowels in one corner with java moss growing in the water. Basically I am not sure which species I have (wenxianensis, asperrimus, or hainanensis). Actually I am not sure if they are all even the same species. They have done well for me over the last two years overall. I have yet to see any signs of breeding behavior though. One thing for sure is that whatever they are they are by far the least outgoing of all of the tylo species that I have,even more so than E. andersoni. They seem to stress easily. I never see them out during the day and when I lift a cork slab to check on them they just do not move. Hope this helps.

Lizamphib - could you post any information you have on the husbandry of this species on the forum, so that everyone else can benefit from it and so that it can be dug up in the future if the question comes up again?

PS Eljorjo - yes I would agree that a small vivarium would also be a good idea, as long as it is still large enough to accommodate humidity gradients. I think that whether or not these animals have a skin condition (and from these photos it is difficult to tell 100%, I'm sure everyone will agree), the conditions mentioned above are a must to reduce stress as soon as possible. There may be other problems that are not related to the shine that may be prevented by doing so.

Sorry for the delay. The wenxianensis are doing really well, and have grown noticably. The skin looks just the same as at the beginning, with a slight shine but still very knobbly. All food that has gone in seems to have been eaten, and they have moved extremely little, although I understand this is to be expected of wenxianensis. Here are a few later pictures, plus one of the tank, which as I said is very simple, just a small drainage layer, then soil and moss, topped with plenty of cork bark. Any further advice would be greatly appreciated.
