Tail versus filter

I noticed last night that my adult male ( Jeffrey ) may have had an encounter with his fluval internal filter. The tip of his tail looks like it had been nipped and stretched, as he has no axolotl companions , just a few rogue snails I can anly think that it got caught in the filter. If this is the case are there any ideas on how I could avoid a repeat? Whilst the damage is minor I rather not see it happen again. The tail tip looks a little better this evening and I will keep an eye on it.

It hasn't happened since to my knowledge but some newts have quite raggedy tails so it's hard to tell what's filter damage vs feeding frenzies. If you're worried about it you can wrap some gauze around the filter intakes.
