Well aside Hynobius, my other main interest are the mole salamanders. I find both genus to be so similar in captive care (but indeed quite different in reporduction). Since I read the article in the old Reptile & amphibian magazine I have been interested in obtaining maybe not so beautifull but quite intruiging species... unfortunately never been able to get my hands on it.

I wonder if there are any people that actually keep or breed with this species ?? I still have the general idea that this genus is kept my many but bred by so (too) few...

Hi Henk, I was keeping a few until just a couple years ago. Very interesting animals. I don't know of anyone breeding them here. Neotenic adults have been bred in lab experiments though.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
