Tank size

My little guy is in a 20 long, but I worry about him becoming huge (11 to 12 inches) and then the tank being too small. Is a 20g long tank a comfortable size for one adult axie? They are "usually" 8-9 inches right?

I will have to change his hides as he grows, since they are small now and he will need bigger later.

I'm sure someone with more experience will reply but with all the research Ive done 20g is great for 1 adult. Some would say it would be fine for 2 but then you might get into water quality issues but that would depend on tank size (20g high vs 20g long) As far as I know 20g is great for 1 adult.

You are completely fine with a 20long! You can get a bigger size if you would like to but don't feel pressured to because your axolotl doesn't need it.

20g for one adult is perfect as long as your filter is built for 50 gallon and up. Seriously , I have my 30 gallon tank running on 100 gallon filter , my 100g filter is very old so it's has the auto (old) slow water movement .

His filter is an Aqua Clear 50, so it's rated for a 50g but I do have it turned down to just over half to slow down the current. If I did go to a 30g I would put my old Aqua Clear 70 on it, which is for a 70 gal.

I guess I will just rearrange things to male more appropriate sized hides when he's bigger.

You can easily block water current with many things , there's lots of posts about how to slow down current . I use bubbles stone, some use loofa , plastic bath sponge, or just plain decor rock cave ,etc. spray bar that comes with most filter would help too.

8-9 inches is not big for a Axo. 11 inches is more common.
The pump flow squeezing is not a good idea.
It is better to make a bypass. In this way you reducing the flow, and the max flow will remain through the filter.

I've reduced the flow with a turtle dock and a sponge, so I guess there's no reason to turn down the flow on the filter. I will turn 8it back up.

11" in a 20 long seems like he may be bumping his nose on things, lol. I already have to rearrange his tank after only a month because his rock caves are too small now. He's growing like a weed!!
