What size tank should i get for my axolotl, he definately needs an upgrade

For one a minimum is a 2ft but I tend to go with 3ft tanks.

I bought a 2ft tank today its 60cm long 30 high and 28 wide. Its definitely big enough for him. does my tank need a lid though?

If you make sure you keep the water level low enough so your axie can't jump out it should be fine. Lids can be bought from pet shops or online and they ain't too expensive.

Dan's right. Around here I can get a plastic screen lid for a 10 gallon (actually made for reptiles) for about 8-10 bucks US.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
