What kind of waterproof tape is safe to use in an aquarium setup? Electrical tape? duct tape? will any of these give off toxins? any body have any experience with these?
 
anywhere that has plumbing supplies should have teflon tape. but if its the same teflon tape i use, it isnt sticky. its kind of like a thin plastic strip of plastic that has a thickness somewhere in between saran wrap and a disposable plastic tablecloth. we use it to wrap around faucets to help seal them (so water doesnt shoot out of where they're connected). its safe, but i cant imagine what you could actually use it for in a newt tank. what are you trying to tape?

i cant imagine duct tape would be ok in a tank. that stuff even smells bad, probably from the chemicals in the glue.
 
I use electrical tape to seal gaps around lids, but I wouldn't use it IN the tank.
 
I'm trying to modify my overhang filter intake into two intakes, one on either side of the tank, so one side of the tank doesnt get filtered more than the other. And to do this, I have to attach the additional hosing (food/laboratory grade hosing) to the intake and into the Y shape that I'd need.
 
why dont you get some "T" hose connectors? or are you looking for a way to mount the intakes so that they dont move?

if the second question, why just silicone caulk them in place? once it cures its perfectly safe, and its not permenant, you can take it off pretty easily with a razor blade.
 
Thats a good point, Ira. But as it turns out, I lost my job today. So this plan is on hold. Just looking for a way to make the filter a litte more effective.
