My girlfriend has a small Axyolotl (6-7 cm) that developed a bubble in its abdomen over the last few weeks. It started out small, then he slowly had more trouble as he would float to the top of the tank, and eventually he became listless and at the worst point he was floating upside down with a bubble as big as his head sticking off the side of his belly, gulping for air once in a while. There are no stones in the tank, and we change the water every other day (partial) but have no kit to check the levels. We think he might have been too stressed from our recent move? He kept his appetite through this all, but became quite inert, the side of his body with the bubble seemed almost paralyzed, I am sure it was quite painful from the look of it. I followed the suggestions I found by lurking on this site.
I lowered the water to just cover him so that he could flip back over right side up,
I changed the water more often
I let the water cool down to 15 degrees C - I didn't put him in the fridge that's outside temperature right now.
I continued to feed him axy pellets (pet stores here in japan have them its probably same as trout pellets?).
After two days in the shallow water we woke up to find him sans-bubble and smiling like nothing had happened. I was almost certain he was on the way out, several times I actually thought he was dead, so this was great news this morning! Thanks everyone who posts good advice here who I believe saved Oopasama's life!
