I swear I was only going to get one axolotl. Then I found two different colors from the same breeder I liked, so I bought them. They are small and currently live in a planted 20 gallon tank, but I will be moving them as they get bigger. Wellllll, today I decided for Mother's Day I was going to get the other two colors I want so I got a 55 gallon tank and stand and am now setting it up. Most people don't understand my obsession with them, so I have come here to share with likeminded individuals :)

I realize depending on the sex I may have to move some around and even get another 30 or 40 gallon tank to split them again as they get older but I'm so excited!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
