Ok so My gold axolotl Thor has had his gills curl but luckily no tail. He is also Less calm when approached but less active too. I think his newly cycled tank just needs a water change again as the quality is lowering again. So i will change the water ASAP and is this the cause of his stress?

Water quality can cause stress as well as currents created by the filter outflow if it is too strong. What are your water parameters and temperature?

Some axolotls will curl at ANY sign of bad water. Out of my 9, only one will curl its gills if there is ammonia or nitrite barely over 0ppm.

Could also be the intensity of the light surrounding him. Or
lack of hiding places, etc. Cutting down the water flow is a great place to start.

My checklist would be the following:

1) What are my parameters like? If I have done a water change very recently, have I cleaned up all the poop I can see? Is my axolotl a 'sensitive' axolotl that reacts to very small changes in water chemistry?
2) Is the flow of my filter very strong? (You can divert the flow of some filters by moving the output nozzle so that it points away from the main body of the tank, by placing a tight/pop sock over the inlet, or by affixing a piece of clean sponge to the outlet so that water can still get out).
3) Do I have adequate hiding places?
4) Is my tank cool enough?
5) Does my axolotl show other signs of illness, such as spots, fungus or wounds?
6) Do I ever use the tank light? Is it very bright? If not, do I have adequate cover from the room's lights?

If all of these are apparently okay, then I would question whether the axolotl has simply matured. I find that some axolotls' gills will curl naturally - some axolotls have very large gills which curl backwards, others simply seem 'curly.' The relaxed behaviour sounds like the natural 'mode' of a juvenile growing into adulthood. Axolotls also sometimes 'freak out' momentarily when scared - a light is suddenly turned on, someone moves suddenly, or something falls over, and the axolotl is momentarily scared. I have an albino that sometimes has crazy moments for no apparent reason (think dogs that get 'wind up their bottoms' and suddenly start acting a bit hyper).

Hope this helps!

Ok so since my filter was super duper low flow and doesn't go any lower I just turned it off all the way and did a water change. He is not moving even when I gently nudge him and when he does move he doesn't use his legs only his tail and swims or wiggles. He hasn't eaten for
2 days but I'm not too worried about that. (He does that anyway sometimes he's not greedy) but other wise he seems healthy and the gills have gotten less curly after the water change and turning off of the filter. I'm not sure of water parameters as I can't find my test kit

He isn't like weak in his movement though just very calm and isn't using his legs

Ok so his condition has progressed he has gone from stressed and lazy to bad condition. He isn't just holding his legs at his side anymore he looks like he can't move them and isn't responsive at all and seems weak. Physically he looks ok though and his water parameter are ph 7.5 nitrates less than .5 and ammonia 0 after the water change I'm not sure about before. Also he has no flow so it's not that so I'm worried he's either poisoned or sick should I put him in clean clean water and fridge him.

Help ASAP

Ok so i need help ASAP because my axie Thor is in bad condition today after seeming stressed for a few days and not moving his legs much. Well now he's in bad condition and I need help. He looks like he can't move his legs and isn't responsive at all unless flipped over and seems weak. Physically he looks ok though and his water parameter are ph 7.5 nitrates less than .5 and ammonia 0 after the water change I'm not sure about before. Also he has no flow so it's not that so I'm worried he's either poisoned or sick should I put him in clean clean water and fridge him.

Re: Help ASAP

If he looks ok physically, I would try putting him in the fridge or giving him a tea bath, not sure what else you should do and hopefully an expert can help you soon.
Good luck

Sorry to hear see he's not doing good. If I were in your situation I would definitely get him into some clean water (assuming that its aged, of course) and dangle a juicy worm right in front of him!

What would I use for the tea bath

He is in clean water just he won't even eat after being in it 24 hours even a little night crawler which is his favorite.

My water change was a total water change and the tank is totally empty now

Re: Help ASAP

Yes that looks good. Is he eating? It might be his food, have you changed it recently? Also you could try putting him in a smaller container with 100% water changes daily for a few days and see if that helps.

If he seems uncomfortable and in paint think about seeing a vet specialised in amphibians and see what they find.

Re: Help ASAP

Could you perhaps provide some pictures? It's a little hard to figure out what is happening just from your description.

In your other thread you mentioned emptying the main tank ..? That'll crash your cycle... was the tank cycled to begin with?

What kind of water are you putting him in? You mentioned aging it, do you use aquarium dechlorinator?

Sorry for the barrage of questions I'm just trying to figure out what might be going on.

I wonder if he swallowed something gravel etc. before you got him. That would explain the lack of appetite. If he's not snapping at his favorite meal, and he's not full, then something is bothering him. How long have you had him, and how old is he?

The tank had a aquaponic filter and was cycled but I removed everything besides his hide and a couple river rocks he was laying on. He looks exactly normal just curled forward gills and legs tucked at his side.

Re: Help ASAP

Also I used aquasafe and my water had no chlorine to begin with I have a well.
