Hello everyone,

I've had my Tiger Salamander since last Christmas (got him as a present from a pet store) and other than maybe getting a belly every once in a while, he doesn't seem to be getting any bigger. I know that he's still young and maybe that's the reason, but i'm just worried that maybe i'm doing something wrong? I don't want him to be unhappy. Thanks for the replies.

Size doesn’t necessarily relate to age. They grow rapidly in the larval stage and slowly when terrestrial. A larval with a constant source of good food may reach 12” upon morphing in the late summer of its first year while others morph out at 6-8 “ around the same time frame then may take a year or so to reach 9-10”. A lot has to do with the type of food they have in their body of water when they are in their larval stage. I have some around 10 -11” that have only grown about 0.5” in five or so years. Once they reach about 10" they grow extremely slow.

What are you currently feeding it as a staple?

If it is eating well and alive I wouldn't see any reason for concern. It will grow over time : )

Thank you all very much for your help. I figured it wasn't a big deal, but it never hurts to ask!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
