To cut a long story short, 1 of my axolotls has three normal toes of 1 of his feet and the 4th looks like its split with 2 parts to it. They look like there growing and not fusing together. Does anyone have any idea on what this could be. The other 3 toes appear to be longer though this could just be an illusion due to the shorter "stumps". As far as i no the toe hasnt been bitten off and his behaviour is normal.
So confused please help
P.s the rest of the toes on the other 3 legs are normal, 4 on other front foot and 5 on back 2 feet.

It's probably just a fluke. Axolotl regeneration (and initial generation, even) isn't perfect. Sometimes you get extra toes, or not enough toes. Or you get toes that are fused together.

A picture would be interesting, but I doubt it's anything to be concerned over.

The daughter of a friend of mine has an axolotl with a divided toe exactly like this- it's not a problem.

I have a group of wild-caught Triturus karelinii which I've had for seven years, all of which have one or more branched toes. I presume this was caused by minor injuries during capture or transit.

Thanks all will try to put a picture up as soon as possible. I think it may have fussed although i havent been able to get a clear look of the toe.

hey
dont worry as such, my little man pepi (wildtype) ended up regenerating 8 new toes on a foot that was bitten off by a tank mate.
looks abit funny but he just acts normal now

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
