Triturus dobrogicus larvae

nice video Jake! they look great and some how seem familar. Good luck with them.
 
Looks great Jake, I know T. dobrogicus grew fast, but I've never seen them grow this fast! What do you feed your worms, fertilizer? haha

Three months???? They have crests and look like that in just three months?????? Ok....i´m doing something really wrong...
 
My mistake.... that's 3 months since the last video. In the last one they were about 1-1.5 inches long, I can't remember how old they were at the time, but they may have already been 2 months old. I do make sure to feed them as much as they'll possibly eat though.
 
Still.....5 months...it´s nuts!
My male won´t grow a crest, it´s rather frustrating xD

Awesome newts Jake! If some of them a cresting then can they mate at this age? I've heard they sexually mature at 2 years right?

It's been about 60 degrees down there lately.

They have very nice crests for their age, but I'm sure they're still too young to breed, but we'll see.
 
Wonder if it is an artifact of them being kept permanently aquatic? Interesting stuff!

Do dobros normally go terrestrial?
 
My T. dobrogicus have bred in their first year. Don't expect a lot of eggs, but it is certainly possible.
 
Can i ask you, Coen and Jake, how you keep your animals? what size a tank, what temps year round, etc....
My male won´t go into breeding condition, it´s very deceiving.....

Hey Rodrigo! I have a young male T.Dobrogicus that is starting to crest as well. He's changing color and his crest is rising everyday now. I'm not saying this to tease you at all, for real I'm not. I started to feed mine less and not as much but didn't starve him. I did this for a short period of time, like a month or two. Not to mention I kept him in a room about 60 degrees. After that short period I moved him to a room with slightly higher temperatures and increased food source and kept him with females.

I keep this group in a 30 gallon tank now, and some of their sibblings (raised by a friend) are in 10 gallon tanks. During the summer the newt room was a pretty constant 67-68 degrees F. Lately I've been leaving the window down there completely open to let in a lot of cool air from outside. I checked the temperature yesterday in there and it was 56 degrees F. I am almost positive that's why their crests grew so much so fast, that and a few good cool water changes.

I've noticed my marm and karelinii juvies cresting in the first year as well.
 
This is my first year in my own house, where I have a separate room to keep the newts. I also keep a window open to let it cool down this winter. Back when I lived with my parents, they just went into breeding condition every now and then, no special things going on with temperatures. If I saw a male going into breeding condition, and I'd want to stimulate it, I'd do lots of cold water changes like Jake mentioned, this really does help.

A couple of the males have full crests. Some of their crests lowered this past week because the weather got pretty warm again (I just love Illinois! jk).

I'm not going to try to breed them, it just happens with the temperature change during the winter.
