Unthinking people.

You guys are good kids. I hope if I ever have any carpet gremlins, they're as reasonable as you are.

carpet gremlins! LMFAO!!!
I will be calling y son Connor a carpet gremlin from now on! He is 2 and has a mind of his own...I am instilling my love for animals in him. I think its important. My mother was an avid outdoorsman, nature lover and has an amazing appreciation for all living things. I think ALL parents should teach these values to their children.

Kudos to you youngsters!!

Hi Taelliejade I have a question for you. What colour type is axie? I got my axie (cracker) from pet shop that didnt know anything about them. Told me to keep in a tropical tank with gravel . Of course the fish nipped his gills off. I have in a new little take until hes better . Iam working getting a bigger one for him. Sorry back to the point they told me mine was white but he looks just like yours? Thanks for the help<!-/quote-!>

my first axolotl, loki, is a golden albino.
also the petstore guy got it all wrong. Axolotls aren't tropical salamanders, some people just think that because they come from mexico. They live in cold water, dont let the temp get any higher then around 24 degrees celcius.

oh, and my second axolotl, kenghis, is a dark melanoid.

Ok thanks for the help I have him in a diffrent tank now till he gains some waight Iam working on geting a bigger better one for him now. I had to use what I had so I could just get him out as fast as I could. temp is about 60-65 now

I second Kara B's statement. Kudos to you youngsters! The girl I was talking about in my original post is around 19 now so age is definately not a judge of smarts or how well you can look after things.
When I was young I used to look after all my friends animals when I was at thier houses if I saw them in poor conditions, then I would give my friends a talking to about how to do better. As you can imagine, I was popular as a kid! Lol! I still do that now. Im currently formulating a care sheet about axies to give all the local pet shops as they have just all changed hands and the new owners know nothing about them.

As for the plight of the 'serial pet killer's' axie, im not sure if the poor thing is dead or alive as neither me or my friend have seen the girl since we heard the axie had fungus. Its so sad and I feel as if I should do more but im not sure what.

Mum taught me to love animals and to always look after everything to the best of my ability. Its a pity that all parents dont do that.

I hope the poor little Axie survived. We also know a serial pet killer, and I eventually told her that I would no longer go to her house even though our kids were best mates, as I was sick of finding decomposing pet mice, rats, or fish whenever her husband was away for any length of time! I don't know how many times I had the same conversation about "I don't understand why my new expensive parrot died"....."Ummmm, dear, I think that leaving the poor bugger out in the middle of Darwin monsoonal rain probably has something to do with it!" I am sure she must have gone through at least 5 parrots! Thank god Axls were prohibited in Darwin!! I can only imagine the suffering!!!!

U all hate me then haha!
I brought my 1st axie Noot because i thought she was 'Cool'. She died. I had no idea how to look after her. Now i have Moomin tho and i just brought her coz i love axies.

It is a HUGLEY bad idea to buy an animal for the look of it. I mean obviouly there's a think about how it looks coz u wouoldnt buy it if u didn't like it. But you really should do research. I was heart broken when i lost Noot.

If you guys thing this is bad, you should see the show called Animal Cops. It is a very sad show. What also is sad is the housing on newts at the Big Chain PetStore.(wont name names) Every time the newts are with frogs, crabs or fish, no hidey-holes and most have fungus. I even saw "melted" newts at one place. Disgusting! I know a regular pet store that used to sell baby dwarf caimans....Can you imagine a little kid buying a poor little 6 inch or less crocodile? But it cant be anyworse that the pet store with the dyed fish, ugh, they inject the fish with neo dye and 80% of them die before going to the petstore. You know it is marketed towards kids. The first time i saw it was those neon glass fish. I was like 7 and i was like "i want one". Then my dad and the man at the fish store tole me it was dyed and that they dont live long and get ich easy i was really sad, not because i couldnt have 'em cus i felt sorry for the fish. So we bought some non dyed glass fish that were happy, I loved them, you could see their insides and when they eat!

Joan S. i noticed your Michigan tag. on one episode of Animal Cops Detroit there was a bust on a house and the guy has pythons, iguanas, scorpios and get this-aligators. The show said all(reptiles) were illegal. Is that state wise or just Detroit?

I am sorry abused animals, especially aquatics really tick me off and make me rant. I dont understand how someone can mistreat a pet, I mean its a living thing, not to mention a pet is a member of the family! You dont dispose of family or abuse them for crying out loud! I also hate that some people are like "oh its just a fish/newt/axolotl/cool_looking_not_expensive_animal no big deal, I will get another one when it dies."
This is a problem especialy in the " I need it now and i want it and must have it NOW" society we live in, not to mention the evil marketing people that sell bad things just to make a large profit margin....

That's not the case in Michigan as a whole, but I'm not sure about Detroit regulations. They didn't have the case on there of the guy in Battle Creek who was busted with 17 cobras, and various large lizards (iguanids, monitors, etc) that were kept in a screened-in porch. COBRAS... They were all in horrible condition. A friend of mine received them for rehab/rehoming, and one died on the 2 hour trip.

Lorie, as for you, you learned your lesson. You're obviously here now, learning how to take care of your animal. That's better than most people.

I have worked at SPCAs, in the past and I am not a fan of Animal Cops. The methods they use to restrain anything they are not sure of are all over the top and unnecessary. When "Animal Cops" get into an issue here where there are exotics involved, they call the Zoo to come out and give a hand so the animals or the people do not get hurt. There was absolutely no need for them to use a control pole to catch a small alligator much less noose snakes around the neck and drag them around....

Snip " But it cant be anyworse that the pet store with the dyed fish, ugh, they inject the fish with neo dye and 80% of them die before going to the petstore."endsnip

Do you have a citation for this regarding the injected fish or is this opinion?
I worked in the pet trade for a number of years and never saw any difference in mortality based on the dyeing of the fish (not that I agree with it).

The dye is typically lost after about three months (which is when people then get irritated about it). These fish (even the non-dyed ones) can be sensitive and tricky to get established for long periods as they often initially want to be fed on live/frozen foods.

snip " and get ich easy" endnsnip

Due to the improper husbandry listed above.
When I worked in the pet trade, I kept them alive in the dealers tanks long enough for them to lose the dye. I also told people that the dye doesn't last a long time so there wasn't much of a demand for them, hence thier long stay.
One of the things I did notice in the pet trade, is that parents will often tell thier kids that something is just going to die so the kids don't want it.....
But enough off topic stuff.
