About 2 days ago I noticed Muppet wasn't moving or eating much anymore. He was constipated after having eaten a marimo (Hokkaido lake ball)
Circumstances of death:
Muppet tore the two marimo I had apart and ate them early on when he moved in about a month ago (after a month in quarantine in a separate tank). I thought that they were all gone but then I noticed he was mid-way through pooping a big fuzzy sprig. It had taken a couple days for the other bits to pass, so I didn't think much of it. When I noticed he was refusing food and starting to get some white fungus, I immediately put him in the fridge. After about 8 hours, Some of the poop had come out, but not all of it. I gave him a 10 minute tea bath (the tea was also in the fridge) and then changed his water and put him back. This morning, I woke up and he was still and upside-down. He didn't react when I turned him over. I'm pretty sure that means he's done. :'( I still have him in the fridge in case by some miracle I'm wrong, but I doubt it.
When I took Muppet out, I noticed Phantom's tail was a little curled at the end. Was she stressed because Muppet was in pain? I don't know, but she breathes a lot of air and I'm wondering if there's something wrong with the water that my 6 in 1 test strips have missed. I moved Phantom to a different tank just in case. I also moved the plants (Anubis Nana and a piece of driftwood with willow grass) to the tank with Phantom. This new tank has no filter. Phantom is still breathing a lot of air (I can tell by the bubbles at the surface of the water), but I can't tell if this is because of water quality or the fact that she's always had really small gills.
I turned off the filter and I'm planning on cleaning the big tank out, then start cycling it again. I should probably change all the things in the filter too. I've only had the filter for a couple months, is it better to change everything? How often does one change canister filter ingredients and then how long before it cycles completely
I started feeding the two of them frozen blood worms about two weeks ago. They seemed to like them, but I'm wondering if their residue may have tainted the water somehow.
Phantom has a curled tail and she looks a little grey around the gills. She's been staying near the surface of the water. Now, I put her in the fridge too, just in case, but if the problem is in the water, that won't help, will it? Amonia, nitrates and pH all test fine in the water and the temperature is 19 degrees. The water near the outtake of the filter was looking a little foamy, is that normal? I don't remember noticing that before. What am I missing?
