A friend told me that caudatas need lights with UVA UBA rays, is it true? I've never heard this before!!! I dont use it and my caudatas are going very fine for years!!

I don't really know if you use the name "UVA UVB" for those lamps, but I am talking about those lamps that simulate the Sun light...You must know what I'm talking about!

I dont think so. No... I think some frogs might need it. But not newt. In fact, not using those light can reduce heat in tank and Caudata prefer to be kept cool.

At this time, calcium metabolism disruptions have been very rarely documented in caudates as opposed to other herps. Most of these documented disruptions were due to excess vitamin A (as retinol) in the diet disrupting the uptake and usage of D3.
Totally nocturnal and/or fossorial animals typically do not use UVB to convert provitamin D to D3 however, a large number of herps that are supposedly nocturnal but begin thier activity periods before sunset have been shown to efficiently convert provitamin D to D3 on exposure to UVB. I would suspect that most caudates do not need UVB for D3 production. IF there is concern then a good vitamin mineral supplement can be used.
With respect to UVA, it has been shown that it can be important for various behaviors such as prey recongnition and territorial defence (for example in Anoles and Desert Iguanas), I am currently unaware of any documentation that it is used in this manner by any caudate.

Ok! that was what I thought... My friend think he is the 'Master of the Wisdom'!! He is very stubborn... And he dont even have a caudate!!!

Thorninmyside:Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation+1

Clareclare:Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?+1
