Hi Folks,

About a week ago I was in Napa Co., California visiting one of my old field sites. Much of January and early February was very dry there, and the ponds didn't fill until a week or so before I arrived. Despite the late start to the breeding season, the amphibian breeding activity was intense!

I used a little point and shoot digital camera to take a few short videos of the newts mating. The videos were taken at night, and the animals were lit by headlamps/flashlight. So the quality isn't too good. But you may still enjoy it, especially if you haven't seen T. torosa mate in the wild. The loud noise in the background is the sound of a few hundred male pacific chorus frogs (Pseudacris regilla) calling. A few males were very excited and amplexed the Taricha.

Hope you enjoy!

Mike
