Viquarium stream set up

Here are some pictures of my new viquarium stream set up. Most of it comes in a box. It has a small pump and two reptofilter style filter inserts. The gravel area acts as a huge biological filter. I'm using it for Triturus marmoratus.

Mike, how much did this cost you and where did you get it from?

I have seen some like it but not since the 80's. The one and only shop in my area has something similar but its more like today's Waters Edge kit where its mostly a back ground with areas for pools and other water features. How ever the box is so old you can barley see the print. It has been bleached from sitting in the window for to long.

Who retails that Viquarium set? I am looking for something like that.

I'm not real good with the computer but will shoot for bigger pictures. It is a new set up that will be offered by TetraFauna. They should be on the market soon. I think they are expensive. I traded for mine.

I thought about that. Hynobius are a little like weasels. They wiggle around and squeeze into tight spots. If you look at the closeup where the liverwort is you can see the opening where the water cascades down from the pump. I wonder what would happen if a Hynobius crawled in there. The current is pretty slow but it could be a problem. Probably not but I like to err on the side of caution.

For Hynobius I'd probably just tilt the tank, pile gravel at the high end, and put new zealand sphagnum and cork or coconut hides on top of the gravel. I'd put a sponge filter in the water end. It wouldn't be as attractive as the viquarium but it would work.

Nice setup. This version looks much better than the one from the 80's. If I remember correctly the old one had a picture on the box of newts, turtles, tropical and coldwater fish all living together in harmony. I worked in petstores back then and it was always a pain explaining to people that you cannot mix all of those animals together - kind of like working at the Above Average Amphibian table today

I really like this setup. Your t. marms should love it!

This is much improved over the older kits as freves touched on and yes, I often had to do the same explaining in my pet shop days too.

If its on the box then it must be true! HAHAHAHA! That's funny. I know a guy at our local pet shop and he's always asking me about what can live with what. I always suggest seperating everything, then I go in there an some paddletails are mixed in with "Patriot Crabs" and I literally pull all the paddletails out and walk up to the counter with them. I get a lot of eye rolling and odd stares their....hmmmm.....oh well.

So this "Tetrafauna" is going to be expensive when it comes out? Any idea of price or where one goes to find them?

A bit off topic but at MARS when I bought the Andersoni off Mike I overheard some guy ask if he can put one in a Vivarium and it was almost like the entire auditorium got silent for that split second as someone attempted to find the appropriate words to explain how it would not work.:ha:

You can pick one up for between 85.00 and 95.00 on line. I'm thinking of getting another one for my Triturus karelinii. I'm real happy with the one I set up. The filter works great.
