water salamander

My daughter found something that looks like a baby salamander-type amphibian in our pool and wants to keep it. I was looking for help identifing it and getting some advice if possible. I've looked online and the only picture that looks similar is for something that lives in the southeast US, called a Two-toed Amphiuma, but I live in California. Is it possible that that is the right identification, or is there something similar that would live in the western US? Any help would be appreciated.

A picture would be very helpful to those with identification skills. A lot of larval salamanders look very similar, especially to the untrained eye. You also might want to give this site I googled up a look. It looks very nice and it has range maps so you can determine what salamanders live near you.
