Hello all,
I am a very new axolotl owner. I made the rookie mistake of not cycling my tank before introducing my two Lucys. Now I am so very nervous and suspicious of every little thing. I'm waiting on a proper testing kit to come in the mail so for now I've been making due with a cheap kit from Walmart. It uses the strips. My ammonia levels are in the stressful zone. I have gotten them down from being harmful/dangerous in the past few days according to the strip. I am doing water changes daily. About 4 out of 20 gallons. I use a cheapo filter for now. I am getting a sponge one also. But waiting on the dreaded mail. I am worried about my babies gills. Both have foward curled gills. I use a loofah hung on the filter to reduce flow. I am wondering if maybe my air bubble strip is causing too much flow. I read that more aeration helps reduce ammonia.
One of my Lucys has white on a few tops of his/her gills.. Which is worrying me. Also all of the gills are kinked and curved funny like. I will post a picture.
All and any help is greatly appreciated! I want my babies to grow and be happy as can be! Not ill
The first picture is of the lucy with the weird gills. The second is of my other lucy showing the curve. They both seem to have to curve in the gills.
