I haven't seen one before, are those colours true to life? I really didn't know there was a certain type but there are many colour mutations these days. Definitely not dumb, I find axolotl genetics quite confusing.

Neil, don't coppers have really red eyes? I'm just trying to get my head around some of the colour variants as I know here in Aus they are very different to some of the Uk and US varieties.

I would have thought it's copper due to the flecks along the body and the color of the eyes. I know every axolotls different but I have two golds and neither look like that. I also thought although coppers aren't particularly common they're more usually found in Aus.

It depends where you are really, I find it hard to find coppers, leucistic and wild types in Victoria :p

Looks like a Copper to me.

Regards Neil

The coppers available in parts of the EU have red eyes, they are a type of albino. I have seen a few pics of Aussie copper coloured axolotls on this site though but they are not technically "copper". Nice looking axolotls though, would quite fancy one myself.

I've seen photos of "Copper" axolotls from both Europe and Australia that either have very obvious red eyes and some that it can be hard to tell. The term Copper was coined to describe these axolotls in Europe and has since been used to name similar animals in Oz. In Australia any axolotl that is albino and doesn't fit into the usual albino categories is called a Copper and I'm afraid I'm guilty of this too.

Surprisingly enough yours actually looks like how a Copper should should look. There is also quite a strong chance that yours was actually bred by me as quite a few of mine have gone out nationally through a large fish breeder. I've attached a photo of possibly one of it's brothers/sisters.

Regards Neil
