Is there any reason to actually add some form of additive to remove chlorine when water left standing in air for 48 hours seems to be chlorine free? I have been using open topped buckets for some time to top up the evaporation drop on a tank with cooling (evaporation technique) fans fitted. This of course is not a huge amount daily and the reason for not adding Aquasafe is purely due to laziness on my part. On the bigger tropical tank I use the additive on all water changes as a matter of course, but on the Axolotl tank only do so on water changes and not on the top ups. I am as ever extremely wary of adding anything to tank water, especially where other than a simple basic formula is used or where calculation of smaller amounts are more critical.

Regards.

I was always told in fish keeping there are also chloramines in water that do not evaporate. That can be just as harmful as chlorine and that is why you use it. Someone else can give you a more detailed explanation. At least that's why I've been using it =)

I understand why you would be like im wary of using this new de-chlorinator because well its new... I only use my de-chlorinator on water changes and any new water I put in the tank (just in smaller amounts depending on the amount thats been taken out? ) :)
Everyone adjusts to their individual ways I guess if it works then no need to change it...like I found out through this thread one of the members uses koi stuff in his/her water which clearly works ... each to their own I guess ^^

Because chlorine isn't the only undesirable chemical in tap water - there are also chloramines and heavy metals that dechlorinator neutralises. All water added to any aqarium should be treated, whether for a top-up or a water change.

I second this - the old wives tale of leaving water out for 24/48 hours to make it safe for fish is just that, a wives tale. Dechlorinate your water.

I use two:
Prime because I believe it is the overall best. It takes care of chloramines, chlorine and heavy metals. It provides slime coat. It also can neutralize ammonia and nitrite for a period of time in emergent situations. (It has other benefits too I'm sure.)

API Stress coat plus strictly for my bettas due to aloe's positive effect on fin regrowth and healing (witnessed this). It also takes care of chloramines and chlorine while providing probably the best (my opinion) slime coat.

Great! Prime seems to be one that comes up alot I see!
Il have to look into this I havent seen it before just relied on my aqua safe hah! ;-)

Seachem Prime is a heavy duty water conditioner that is used a lot in the hobby because it pretty much neutralizes the **** out of everything. XD Know though that it only detoxifies (locks) ammonia and nitrite for a period of time; only water changes can completely remove them.

I keep a bottle of Prime on hand for water changes in quarantine tubs and such where there's no cycle and everything has to be perfect - there's ammonia in my tap that other conditioners don't take care of (but it's a small amount and in my cycled tanks the bacteria take care of it).

Also be warned prime smells horrifically like sulfur. It stinks and if you're sensitive to that you're gonna hate using it XD

I use API Stress Coat +, 4 drops from a .2ml pippette per 2L. Mine are babies and still in tubs so using 2L bottles for water changes. It also helps maintain slime coat.

Haha Kaini sulfur stinks! Aqua safe I can dwal with it smells to me like nutrobol for reptiles haha!
Thats pretty cool stuff though I mean keeping ontop of water changes using that should be fine right? Unless you dont like the smell ofcourse ;-) haha!

Soberish (I like that name haha!)
The joys of having babies I loved having mine as babies then they go into bigger tanks and everything that was needed before gets tripled haha!

Sounds like alot of you guys use 2 products im only using the one that takes out chlorine and chloramines and heavy metals and uses aloe vera ... is this still okay haha?

It's fine to just use that one. A dechlorinator is a dechlorinator. *shrugs* They all basically do the same thing.

I kinda like the smell of sulfur.... Lol.... Thinking I'm gonna keep a bottle of Prime around though. Didn't know about the ammonia and nitrite part!

I use plain sodium thiosulfate. No aloe, no additives. I found the one with aloe caused fungus on my axies' gills and slime on the walls of my tank .

How do you use ST? Do you make up a stock solution with distilled water, or add it directly to the tank? How do you dose it?

40g sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate crystals in 1L tap water makes dechlorinator mix.
5ml of this treats 10L of tap water for aquarium use.
I get the crystals from a photographic suppliers on Amazon.
