i just bought a sponge filter and airline tubing off of amazon, but it’s occurred to me that you need...well...some form of energy to power any filter. not sure what i need, thought i’d ask the lovely people of caudata :)

An air pump? The Venturi effect of the air rushing through the center pulls water through the foam.

Yes, that is exactly the kind of air pump I have and would recommend. They're pretty quiet, but some aren't calibrated quite correctly (has to do with the magnets), so if yours seems really noisy, exchange it for a different one. I also recommend putting a book or something beneath it in order to lessen vibrations. You do also need to keep the pump somewhere above the top level of the water in order to prevent backflow.

You will also need an air regulator as the flow of air coming out of the pump is too powerful for a single sponge filter.
The air line goes from pump into air regulator. Side valves can then connect to multiple air driven devices and air flow is easily regulated
with the twist of a lever.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
