Hi, I'm wondering if anybody would recommend a cheaper filter for a 10-gallon tank? It's my first time, although I already have 1 spotted salamander. I just am unfamiliar with the terrain. ;) I saw a recommendation for the Fluval 30 filter because it has adjustable flow and bio filtering, but I'm not sure. Thanks!

I'd prefer one below $100, but please post anything and everything above as well.

canister. you will get a bigger tank eventually forsure :)

If you want something foolproof: A Fluval canister with at least 4 x filter volume and a spray bar to diffuse the flow! If you look for offers you can get an Eheim canister for <$100 too. These will last for 20 years with good care.

But... to start with you could use a sponge filter + an air pump. It's super cheap and perfect for small axies!

Internal filters that I recommend are Fluval U2, Eheim (all models, but Biopower is lovely) or AquaEl Fan Filter 1+. They all work great for years and have adjustable outlets.

As for HOB's I've only used Eheim Liberty, which works nicely but is a bit bulky and produces a current that may be too strong for axolotls (I use it in one of my tropical fish tanks).
